In September of 2021, Daniel Seligman wrote the first version of SMOC in 4 hours for a 48 hour playwriting festival. This version was 15 minutes long and featured 3 songs, including versions of
"I Don't Wanna" and "A New Life" which are both still a part of the score.
Seligman continued to develop the piece, and in June of 2022, he put up a 45 minute one-act version of the show at Open Jar Studios. This version featured 4 characters: Louise, Mark, Mildred, and Lady Liberty.
After the Summer 2022 workshop, Mia Ehrlich joined the team as director. Seligman and Ehrlich collaborated on 2 short presentations of songs from the show at Marymount Manhattan College.
